How to Plan the Perfect Co-Op Game Night
A great game night doesn't happen by accident. A little planning turns a chaotic 'let's play something' into an event everyone looks forward to. Here's how to do it right.
Pick a Date That Actually Works
Don't just throw out 'this weekend?' in the group chat. Use a scheduling tool or poll to find overlapping availability. Evenings work for most people, but you might be surprised — some groups prefer weekend afternoons. Lock the date at least 3 days in advance so people can plan around it.
Choose the Game Before the Night
Never arrive at game night without a plan. Vote on the game at least a day ahead. This gives everyone time to install, update, and maybe watch a tutorial. If you're playing something new, share a 2-minute YouTube overview in the group chat so nobody walks in blind.
Set Expectations on Length
Is this a 2-hour hangout or a 5-hour marathon? Set expectations upfront. People are more likely to show up if they know the commitment. For new groups, aim for 2–3 hours. Veteran squads can push longer with a snack break in the middle.

Voice Chat Setup
Discord is the standard, but any voice chat works. Create a dedicated channel for game night so you're not disturbing others. If someone doesn't have a mic, they can join — text chat during gameplay works in a pinch for turn-based games.
Have a Backup Game Ready
Sometimes a game doesn't click, someone can't connect, or the server is down. Always have a second option ready. Pick something everyone owns that's easy to jump into — Among Us, Jackbox, or a browser game like skribbl.io work as universal backups.
End With a Plan for Next Time
Before everyone logs off, agree on the next session: same game or try something new? When should you play again? This keeps momentum alive. The groups that last are the ones that always have the next date on the calendar.
